explore highland perthshire
fill your days with enjoyment, before returning to westland's hotel
Virtually every outdoor activity or pursuit imaginable - from light to serious or adventure. History and heritage trails also abound and the whole area is a nature lover's paradise too.
We are so spoiled for choice here that we can only feature some of the main delights below.
Golf
With over 40 lovely golf courses in Perthshire offering public access, there is a style and standard of course to suit everyone. Parkland or Heath, simple 9 hole to inspiring 18, beginner's level or championship, lady or gentleman, you'll find it in Perthshire, and notably around Pitlochry, which offers a choice of ten superb courses within easy reach to test even the most ardent golfer, including a very fine local course, a highland gem at Taymouth Castle, and a stunning international class test at Blairgowrie.
Where proximity to the hotel, clear air, and excellent long light from spring to autumn allows two invigorating and stimulating rounds per day comfortably for the fanatic. Or a combination of an exciting 18 and a gentle 9 for the more restrained enthusiast. Or mix excellent golf with some great fishing or shooting which we can arrange - or perhaps a distillery tour.
And Carnoustie, St Andrews and Gleneagles are all around an hour's drive away.
The green fees will also surprise you here with their modesty. Most courses offer day and round tickets. Numerous great value concession tickets are available for use across a number of fine courses throughout Perthshire.
The tranquil setting of the courses often belies hidden dangers ahead! - but their subtle design (many by great course architects) and their charm and character shine though and will provide great golf and great memories.
The hotel warmly welcomes golfers and is happy to arrange late bars, morning bacon rolls, private dining, prizes for groups, corporate golf days, non-golfers programmes and much much more.
Pitlochry Walks
Highland Perthshire is a walker's paradise amidst scenery to die for, with some of the finest mountains, lowland trails, unspoilt roads and paths, mixed walking and designated routes in the British Isles. A wealth of walks for walkers of all abilities, from easy low-level walks and strolls to more difficult mountain scrambles - from a few hours' rambling and gentle walking, to veritable expeditions.. Without doubt the best way to enjoy Highland Perthshire and the Pitlochry area in particular is on foot and part of the appeal of walking here is the diversity of the seasons. Each has something different to offer as indeed does every day.
Whenever you visit, there are walks to suit everyone, from a one-hour stroll with the kids to a multi-day trek through some of the last wilderness areas of Europe. At all times of the year, some of the most glorious scenery in Scotland can best be enjoyed during one of the many planned walks in the Pitlochry area. But if you choose to pay us an autumn visit you should time it with the Pitlochry Autumn Gold Walking Festival during which experienced guides lead you through stunning landscapes. The festival combines walking with an active evening itinerary of presentations and receptions.
Perthshire Trees
Perthshire is "Big Tree Country", featuring some of the most remarkable trees and woodlands anywhere in Europe. And travel along our leafy country roads and explore remnants of Scotland's ancient wildwood, discover where modern forestry began in this country , wander through the homeland of globetrotting plant hunters, marvel at the stunning specimens they introduced from around the world, delight in fanciful follies and grottoes, perhaps have a close encounter with some of our woodland wildlife
Our forests, woods and country gardens offer an unrivalled assortment of glorious greenery, colours changing dramatically with the seasons - and all within easy reach. A short trip from the hotel takes you to Europe's oldest tree, the world's highest hedge, Britain's tallest tree, the sole survivor from Shakespeare's 'Birnam Wood', Europe's oldest living thing (the Fortingall Yew est. 3000 - 5000 years old)...the list goes on.

Ask the hotel for full details. Travel is by coach between places of interest, but some easy walking is included in all tours, so you will need outdoor footwear and (perhaps!) waterproofs. We can supply packed and picnic lunches/snacks. Remember the camera to capture magic moments.
Shooting
Many types of shooting, stalking and hunting are available in the immediate area and the hotel can put together a great package for an individual or a group. Do enquire in advance as while you can shoot something in Scotland 365 days a year, some opportunities are seasonal, you may require to observe certain formalities especially if you are bringing guns from overseas, and as we work with local agents plenty of notice is desirable so that you will not be disappointed. In some cases a minimum number of participants is required. The hotel has secure gun storage facilities.
Choose from first class bird shooting with driven pheasant and grouse, rough shooting, woodcock and some unbelievable goose shooting. There is also deer stalking for red, roe, sika and fallow deer together with a wealth of other sporting activities you can combine such as golf, fishing, hill walking and Munro climbing.
